Spotify has become a Goliath in the music world but for some, as with the democratisation of so many other things, it has reduced their income to a slow trickle. So whilst we, the punters, love Spotify, it may not always be the case for the artists. That said it’s one of the best platforms around for getting your music out there.
Spotify isn’t the be all and end all, there are other destinations for both the consumers and creators amongst us.
I love Bandcamp and have come across some great music there. There are many more beyond that, some of which I’ve not tried at all.
In this post, I am going to dig into my archives from Spotify, YouTube Music, Bandcamp and
from Substack! I would also like to thank my friend for sending me great suggestions via WhatsApp over the years!See what I did there, Substack has a new mention feature, very cool.
Hania Rani
I first discovered Hania through
and then again later via YouTube music which led onto discovering some content on their main platform, including performances in Seattle for KEXP (which often crops up) and Les Invalides in Paris.Hania, from Poland, studied at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music.
Her layering techniques, combining two pianos and Sequential circuits Prophet synths, gradually building up to complex harmonic crescendos. Her music is gentle but draws you in on it’s journey to the most uplifting of conclusions.
Her music reminds me a little bit of Olafur Arnalds, Agnes Obel (especially her singing voice).
Hania is performing at the Queen Elizabeth Hall on London’s Southbank this coming weekend, Sunday 4th December.
You can find out more about her via her very own website
Hi Nick. I listened to Hania on KEXP. Lovely compositions and a really nice set. Thanks for the recommendation <smiley face> Ben.
Yes there are similarities there and I must check out more of Poppy's music, Nils I am familiar with and they all use some wonderful layering techniques in their music including the use of tape, to record and play back at half speed. Watching their live performances, I've noted this and it's genius.
