I’m relaunching this Substack as “Modulations”, it was just a personal blog of sorts but I felt that I’d be better off latching down to something that concentrates on electronic music, dabbling with sounds, exploring the sonic possibilities but before I delve into what I plan to write about and most importantly - teach; that is where the subscription model comes into this, I would like to say…
Apologies to anyone who didn’t sign up for this and has no interest in the topic, my old newsletter wasn’t working for me as I had hoped, so I am shifting all of my photography content over to my alternate account at Rambling Photographer - why not check that one out anyway. I always have links on the home page to my other publications and those written by others.
I won’t be offended if anyone leaves because I’ve moved the goalposts. If you know someone who wants to learn more about using their computer or iPad to produce music, let them know about us.
Still reading? Ok thanks, gooooood.
What is this new thing going to be about then?
Sound design, sequencing, synthesizers, electronic music, the tools, the apps, the theories and will share some music found around Spotify and all of the other platforms out there, just for a dash of inspiration!
The content is going to be partly free and paid. I feel that if I am going to put the time and effort into doing some video posts here or whatever format, a contribution would help give me the incentive to put the hard work in. I could achieve similar on YouTube, Patreon and so on, however this is Substack, it does things differently and allows us to blend the written word with audio and video.
Let’s not talk about Twitter…
Fancy a chat?
If you’ve not seen the chat feature yet, you are either living somewhere remote or have turned your notifications off! I got a bit swamped yesterday by the sheer number of notifications but it was ok, it all calmed down quite fast!
I’m not quite sure if you can ping me for a chat or anything like that but I can start them off, just for a bit of a casual element alongside my longer form writing and deeper dives I plan to do.
Coming up
AudioModern have just launched their new product LoopMix on both the iPad and desktop platforms. It looks very good, I’ll do something on that soon, once I’ve got it and had a chance to play with it
I shall be looking at how to engineer sounds using both VCV and BitWig, they achieve similar goals in slightly different ways. You can get VCV for free!
