The big AUv3 guide for you iPad musicians out there
I've been writing about making music on the iPad over the course of time and sat down to write a list of the plugins I already own and the ones I've yet to get. It is a big list, oh yeah!
Having just upgraded my iPad this week to the latest version of the device, I thought it would be good to return to writing about one of my favourite tools for developing musical ideas with. I predominantly use my iPad for music and my 2019 model was starting to struggle with some of the more CPU intensive apps, to the point that more and more products are being launched for M series iPads only.
Take for example Logic Pro. Most of its features worked ok but some were actually disabled for older devices, especially the new stem splitting tool which I demonstrate below in an 8 minute video.
So I opted for the iPad Pro with 13 inch screen, M4 processor and 1TB of storage onboard. The bigger screen is so good, it’s crisp and I am currently writing this newsletter on it, as I haven’t yet got the hardware keyboard for it, I’m using a spare stand for it which works perfectly for it to be honest.
It is indeed very thin and manages to stay really cool.
Splitting your stems
Anyway let’s have a look at the new stem splitting tool. Drop in a recording that features the classic instruments and it outputs them to 4 tracks, so that you can grab a drum loop, chop it up and create new sample based instruments or whatever you’re aiming to create.
Tracklib finds
I am very excited to see there is a new sounds section within Tracklib, where they’re sharing sample packs, handy for Koala and the SP404. I will be exploring how we can use this material in Logic, as an alternative to Koala at a later point.

The big AUv3 guide - coming to the newsletter next week
Next week sees the start of a massive ongoing guide to the ever growing ecosystem of instruments and effects that are available from the App Store. It’s tough knowing where to begin to be honest, so I’m going to kick off with some video content with either Logic or AUM both excellent host programs. Shall jam and offer some written explanations along with them.
Audio
Here are some audio clips, straight out of my iPad that I’ve created this week. I will expand on all of these in video format, also coming up soon. Going to be busy.
Looking forward to the big companies, Native Instruments, Waves, etc. introducing their products.
Doesn't look like I'll be able to do much with my 2013 iPad Air Gen 1 then! It is very old, still works for a lot of things, probably not music though! :)
