Weekly round-up - Bitwig is turning 5 soon
A new Bitwig soon, lots of new apps and exciting things going on - I plan to explore them all in the coming weeks, enjoy!
Hi welcome to another issue of Modulations, the newsletter about computer based music, though we do have a couple of focal points at the moment with the iPad being top of the tree, we do also love Bitwig, Tidal Cycles and a bit of VCV from time to time.
So in today’s selection from across the web, mainly Youtube today, we’ve opened up the scope a little bit. Should we keep a narrow focus, should we be broad? That’s the good old challenge of running a newsletter or indeed a blog of any kind.
Dan Gorelick, Tidal Cycles
Since I became interested in Tidal Cycles, I’ve discovered a number of artists that use the tool to create their music and I will share some from time to time via this newsletter. I shared one of Dan’s videos not so long ago but this one is really good, stick with it, it builds slowly, is a long video so save some time for it :-)
True pan
A new app out for iOS and the AUV3 format and I’ve come across a number of videos demonstrating it’s use. Panning is one of those things that is better appreciated with headphones and it takes a lot of skill to master it but by the looks of things, True Pan provides a whole new level of expressiveness to the art of panning in your music.
Bitwig 5
Matthias is a fabulous teacher of music as a whole, his passion and personality are infectious when it comes to Bitwig. Matthias and many others have recently been trying out the new beta version of Bitwig, it looks like there are some great new features and a further extensions to the already brilliant modulation system, which is the phrase that inspired the name of this newsletter!
Replicant 3
I am going to be looking at this one really really soon, as its another plugin from my favourite developer Audiodamage, I just need a little time with it in order to produce a good video, that I’ll put out on Substack, Hive’s Cast Garden and Youtube probably.
Brainbud
Leo walks through this new plugin from Cem Olcay, it looks interesting, as it works with other existing apps in the “Bud” series as a utility to set the Key, scale and a whole lot more. I am excited for this, as it can really help in the composition process for people like me who work mostly with sequencers.
New packs
There are some new packs on the scene for Loopmix and Virsyn’s Tera Pro auv3 apps, again I hope to get my hands on those for the next video that I do.
Finally
I am about to test some of these out for myself and will do a write up/video/podcast about them in due course. In fact having some time off soon, will be great for the creative brain to start exploring the wealth of great products coming on the market. I took stock recently of the apps I’ve already got and have a surprising number of VSTs and AUs - are you the same? Do you buy lots of plugins, use some a great deal and others less? I am intrigued to know.
I have made a note to write up a list of the plugins/apps I’ve got and do a post on each one or to make use of the old and new in my Substack content, that will provide endless scope for weeks, months and years to come.
